Through Normandy

We arrived in France at Dieppe and travelled across Normandy to St Malo staying at Honfleur and Bayeux. Highlights, all helped by the wonderful weather, have been:

  • The white cliffs between Dieppe and Le Havre which easily match the English ones. This photo is of Étretat.

  • The excellent exhibition of the work of Dufy at the Musee D’Art Moderne Andre Malmaux (MuMa) in Le Havre. http://www.muma-lehavre.fr/ This photo is of a big A made of containers which is not part of the museum but is just outside it. (In fact the components are smaller than the real containers that pass through the port nearby, but are made to look like them.)

  • The annual medieval parade in Bayeux which happened to start off from the square outside where we were staying at around our usual bedtime. The parade was a great combo of ordinary local people dressed up as in medieval times (some very DIY and taking liberties with “medieval”; some in fancy hired outfits) and various performers and groups including witches of the scariest leering sort on stilts and some large-scale puppet white horses, which were hard to photograph well in the dark.

  • The Bayeux tapestry which is not a tapestry at all, but embroidery. Beautiful, timeless and imaginative work and amazing that it has survived intact for so long. For once we were at a five-star attraction without crowds because we managed to get there early.
  • And of course beaches. This photo is of Pirou Plage.

Oh I would love to see the Bayeux tapestry. A truly amazing piece of art and history. Fantastic that you happened to be in Bayeux just on time for the parade :-)

Enjoy moving South, best
