Sea mist at Foz do Arelho which has a calm shallow lagoon beach as well as a rough, steep Atlantic side and boardwalks along the sandstone cliffs.
Fortaleza de Peniche was used to house political prisoners throughout the Salazar regime until April 1974. It is now partly a museum and celebration of escapes which required both meticulous organisation and brave silence from the local people who could sometimes see the escapes happening. The rusted iron wall is a memorial which lists the names of the 2510 men who were imprisoned here between 1934 and 1974. These days Peniche is a surfing centre as well as a fishing town.
