A few days inland in the Basque foothills of the Pyrenees. It has been lovely to see hills and mountains – the last were in Ireland (Kerry) six weeks ago. And it is also good to stretch my legs a bit by walking up and down hills instead of wandering around towns or flat-ish coast paths. Our walks have taken in the Pas de Roland and a little of the GR10. This photo (near Itxassu) expresses one of my favourite ways to spend some time – on a clear path with low risk of getting lost, a good view, some sunshine and no crowd ahead of me. Stellar views and remarkable places often come at the cost of hordes of people.

We hoped to do a third more ambitious walk, but the weather closed in and we went to Bayonne instead. The “mirroir d’eau” there gives the same misty impression as our mountain walk would have done.

It’s a nice town to wander about in, even without the sun.
